Three Levels of Decor

Three Levels of Decor

It is a great idea to have your kitchen current with a theme that you feel good about.  You may want to have a rustic style for a while then a retro look may be what you want & next you may be ready for ultra modern.  On the other hand you may want to change your theme according to the seasons & holidays.  For the most part you can accomplish significant theme changes with little expense.  I personally enjoy having a kitchen that reflects the current season or holiday, this helps bring the mood of the season or holiday into the kitchen.

The shelf that I have pictured is shown unadorned then with spring time decor & with St. Patrick's Day decor.  This shelf is easily transformed from one theme to another.  If you change a few key items in your kitchen you can acquire the appearance of a complete transformation.

I like to divide kitchen decor into 3 levels.

Level 1

Level 1 will consist of the most expensive items in your kitchen & thus should be neutral in regard to your decor.  This allows you to change the appearance of your decor with minimal expense.  If you choose neutral appliances they will compliment various decor themes.
Some of the level 1 items include:  Large appliances, cook stove, refrigerator, dish washer, built-in micro wave, lighting, cabinets, sink & faucet, table & chairs, paint for walls.

Level 2

Level 2 contains less expensive items that can be replaced if desirable to enhance your decor theme.
Examples of level 2 decor items are:  Shelves, wall hangings, movable fixtures, toaster, mixer, coffee maker, can opener, food processor etc.

Level 3

Level 3 is your array of inexpensive accent items that can be purchased to bring home your decor theme.
Various level 3 items are:  Wot-nots to match your current decor theme, knife rack, utensils in display, pots & pans, K-cup rack, paper towel rack, spice rack, dish towels, pot holders, heirlooms, canister set, candles, calendar, fruit, clock, recipes etc.

I suggest replacing at least 2 or 3 items in level 2 and as many as you fell necessary in level 3.  I feel it is good to rotate at least 4 themes per year, sometimes more.  You can use the same items for the themes from year to year.

Conclusion

I hope that you have found these ideas helpful.  I believe that we should enjoy spending time in our kitchen and by improving our surroundings we can create a better environment for our creativity.
